UN Water Conference 2023

First ever UN Water conference was held in Mar del Plata, Argentina in 1977. 50 Years later, world leaders, government sectors, policymakers, and NGO’s from various parts of the world will gather in UN Headquarters, New York on March 22 – 24 to address global action for water. World community will come together and accelerate on collective water action oriented goals to ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all. Representatives of UN Member States, UN system, and over 6,500 participants have registered to attend the conference. The UN Water Conference will be hosted by the United Nations and Co-hosted by the Kingdom of the Netherlands and the Republic of Tajikistan along with the World Community to address the urgent water crisis. The Conference will play a vital role to bring world leaders together to advance global action for water.

During the Water conference there will be five interactive dialogues: 

  1. Water for Health: Access to WASH, including the Human Rights to Safe Drinking Water and Sanitation
  2. Water for Sustainable Development: Valuing Water, Water-Energy-Food Nexus and Sustainable Economic and Urban Development
  3. Water for Climate, Resilience and Environment: Source to Sea, Biodiversity, Climate, Resilience and DRR
  4. Water for Cooperation: Transboundary and International Water Cooperation, Cross Sectoral Cooperation, including Scientific Cooperation, and Water Across the 2030 Agenda
  5. Water Action Decade: Accelerating the implementation of the objectives of the Decade, including through the UN Secretary-General’s Action Plan

The UN 2023 Water Conference and the Water Action Agenda will unite the world for water. The key building blocks of the Water Action Agenda are:

  • commitment to action
  • sustained and scalable implementation
  • follow-up and review processes

Uplift You Water Action Agendas: UN SDG goals # 6 – Clean Water and Sanitation

  • Ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all.
  • By 2028, achieve universal and equitable access to safe and affordable drinking water for all.
  • By 2028, achieve access to adequate and equitable sanitation and hygiene for all and end open defecation, paying special attention to the needs of women and girls and those in vulnerable situations.
  • By 2028, substantially increase water-use efficiency across all sectors and ensure sustainable withdrawals and supply of freshwater to address water scarcity and substantially reduce the number of people suffering from water scarcity.
  • Support and strengthen the participation of local communities in improving water and sanitation management.
